Ab exercises are pointless????

by Melissa
(Dallas)

Wow this makes you sound like a fantastic moron. Youre right CORE exercise may not burn fat and give you a "six-pack" but they are highly necessary for strengthening your core... you know that thing that HOLDS UP YOUR SPINE. And with an overwhelming amount of adults that complain about lower back pain (80% to be exact) that is largely contributed to the fact that they have a weak core/abdominals, one would think you would post such ignorant comments like:

11. Abs
The abs are a muscle group that doesn't need very much specific work at all unless you have a weakness. You only know if you have a weakness in your abs when your body fat % is low enough.
*** you will only know when BF% is low enough????? Dumbest thing i've heard in a while. Lower back pain or lordosis are both pretty good indicators****

Most people have very nice abs under the layers of body fat. When your body fat is low enough to see your abs, then you'll see that six pack... But ab exercises are pretty useless for getting a six pack.

Ab exercises do not burn fat around the abs... that's a myth. So I don't even bother with ading ab exercises to many of my weight training programs. They are a waste of time.

**yes, it obviously is a waste of time to strengthen your core which helps your entire posture. Who would want to waste time doing that? Just in case you didn't quite catch the tone in my typing.. that was sarcasm. ***

Yes, ab exercises are pointless IF...

Hey Melissa,

Maybe you should stop calling me a moron before you even realize what I'm saying...

Maybe I didn't explain it well enough for you to understand. So, I'll do it again.

I'm not sure what 'CORE' exercises you are talking about, but I am telling you right now that compound weight lifting exercises work your core plenty.

There is no need to waste your time doing POINTLESS and USELESS ab exercises (like crunches and leg raises) if you're using a full body workout program intelligently designed to work every major muscle group in your body.

For example, there is no core ab exercise that will work your core better than Squats, Deadlifts, Overhead Press, Pull Ups, etc. Have you ever done a 1-arm overhead press that I highly recommend? Why don't you try a heavy set of those and tell me that doesn't work your core better than any ab exercise you can come up with.

What's the purpose of your core? You don't think compound weight lifting exercises fulfill that purpose?

I will say it again... if you are using compound weight lifting exercises and doing them progressively as ALWAYS RECOMMENDED on my website, there is absolutely NO NEED to waste your time doing ab exercises.

You can continue wasting people's time working their abs with POINTLESS ab exercises, and I'll continue to recommend full body compound weight lifting exercises.

I believe those exercises are enough to strengthen your core so your spine doesn't collapse (wow! look, my spine hasn't collapsed and my core is very strong... how did that happen? i haven't done any crunches today... oh no!). If you didn't catch that, that was a little bit of sarcasm.

Maybe you should learn to read an entire concept and strategy before you take a single paragraph and make it stand alone... and then call someone a moron.

I really don't appreciate being called a moron -- I know you could care less or you woudn't have called me a name in the first place. We could have a more civilized conversation if you want or you can keep calling me names. In the end, it doesn't really matter what you call me.

And the part about the abs being a weakness... that was intended to be a weakness in aesthetics and size -- not strength or function. If the person is doing compound weight lifting exercises recommended on this website, their core will be strong. Stop taking things out of context. I could have explained it a little better so I apologize for that part. Most things, I believe I take the time to explain pretty well.
