Back Support Weight Belt?

Josh,

I noticed you don't mention using a back support weight belt in your book. I used one back in the day when I did squats, deadlifts, and cleans. I was wondering if its just a preference to use one or if you have a reason for not recommending one?

Really Just Preference on a Support Belt

Mike,

I've personally never needed a back support belt so I've never used one before... ever. If it all possible, I wouldn't use a back support belt.

I know you're not a beginner, but some beginners may be reading this I and don't believe they should use a support belt at all. I think they should work on increasing strength in their core and the belt does not help with this.

If you are squatting and deadlifting huge amounts of weight, then you might think about getting one if it helps you complete those lifts. But, I wouldn't use one until you are very strong in your core.

Now, I've never used the belt at the link above but many people seem to like it a lot. But still, I don't recommend using a back support belt unless you really need one.

I prefer that your core muscles get worked harder during Squats, Deadlifts, Rows, and other exercises. I believe the back support belt hinders that.
