bench press right way

by Keith Lorino
(Belleville, IL USA)

I have been reading many articles on bench pressing some say to arch the back and only the glutes and upper shoulders are on the bench and others are saying keep the back flat on the bench with feet on the floor,I know that the wrists and elbows are suppose to be directly under the bar but the other two kind of confuse me.

Thanks and have a wonderful day.

How to Bench Press Properly
by: Josh -- Author WLC System

As you've seen, everyone has a different opinion on the bench press and proper fprm for the bench press movement. It really comes down to what you want to get from the bench press.

If you want to get the biggest bench press possible, you're going to lift slightly different than if you want to build muscle and strength. For example, you'll be doing very low reps with one method and higher reps with another method.

When it comes down to it, though, I always trust in Coach Mark Rippetoe and his advice for not only the bench press but all of the other important exercises.

You can watch some of his bench press videos on another page of this website:

Proper Bench Press Form and Technique

I would watch those videos first as that may answer your questions.

If you are serious about getting a huge bench press, just remember that all the other BIG exercises like the squat, deadlift, overhead press, rows, pull ups, and dips will help increase your bench press too.

Food also plays a big part in getting stronger.

For a great bench press program, I have to direct you to my good friend Mike Westerdal at Critical Bench. Here's a link to the page where you can get more info on his bench press program:

Bench Press Program from Critical Bench

The link above takes you to another website where the main focus is on the bench press. They are the bench press experts.

If you need any other information or have other questions, feel free to ask. But you can always trust in Mark Rippetoe for information on proper form and technique. I learned most of what I know from him.

If you don't already have a copy of Starting Strength or the Starting Strength DVD, you can get them at the links below:

Starting Strength DVD

Everyone interested in weight training should definitely have a copy of Starting Strength. I highly, highly recommend the book and the DVD. If you don't have access to a top weight lifting coach, you have to teach yourself. The best way to teach yourself is to get a copy of the book and the DVD above.

It's really the only way to teach yourself proper form and technique and most stuff you find out there is horribly wrong. You can trust in Mark Rippetoe.
