Commitment

Josh,
I just finished reading the WLC program and had to shoot you an email with my commitment to doing the program with full intensity. I had a hard time sleeping the last few nights because I am so excited to get going on everything.
After reading your manual I feel I know you a bit so let me give you a little background on me so you feel like you know who you are talking to.
I am 26 years old, live in Utah, married for 4 years, no kids and working on a second bachelors degree in nursing. I am planning on working in the ICU for a year or two and doing a masters or doctorate level program in anesthesia.
In high school I started in weight lifting and long distance running and was not real big on the team sport stuff but I still played football and la crosse. In my high school years I went from 155 lbs to my peak at 190 lbs, 8% body fat, and 5' 11".
Now I am 170 on a good day, not sure of my body fat and still 5' 11" and I feel like I melted away. I used to be able to bench 315 and now I struggle with 145. I never eat breakfast, drink lots of soda, eat out all the time, maybe get two meals a day with some junk food mixed in. I have not been consistent with any exercise program since 2004.
I am ready to change and stop making excused that I am too busy or too tired. I came across your material by chance while searching for some online workout charts.
My wife has gained some weight since we have been married (25-30 lbs) so she is also in a desperate situation to change.
All my friends from high school and family members seem to be going downhill and I just don’t want to go with them. I want to be the crazy diet workout guy that won't eat desert.
Your message jumped out at me because it is everything I knew in my gut about lifting and eating but in a total and complete package with no room for guessing. You have done all the leg work and now all I need to do is do it.
My mom is on a new diet fad it seems every few months but she just won't exercise. Have you heard of HCG diet, livin skinny, changing the acidity of your water to be more basic? I know it's all crazy stuff but people buy it because they won't have to work hard. They think the more money that is spent on it the better it will work.
I have always know it's about balanced diet and exercising but could never have worded it in such a common sense and eloquent way you did in your manual.
I just finished up taking human physiology, organic bio chem, and micro biology and it's fun to know about all the processes that you talk about in your book. Your probably already know this but if you don’t I am sure you would be interested.
In your discussion about muscle hyperplasia and muscle hypertrophy, I don’t know what to believe about hyperplasia but I know one thing for certain, nothing is certain.
Muscle hypertrophy or the increase in muscle size is due to the body using amino acids to build more actin and myosin filaments which are the contractile filaments of a muscle fiber.
Two other factors come into play in the power of a contraction and the first is muscle tissue will build more mitochondria in the muscle tissue providing increased energy.
The second factor is the way the nervous system is wired to the muscle and the increase in stimulus causes more muscle recruitment of additional muscle fibers.
You train your nervous system over time to recruit more muscle fibers which will increase the overall contraction and allows you to lift heavier objects.
I love the human body!
Thanks again for taking the time to write an exercise program that is based in science, results, and most importantly, common sense.
Sincerely, Michael T.
