Intermediate Weight Lifting and how to know if you're considered an intermediate...
Intermediate Weight Lifting is going to be slightly different than Beginner Weight Lifting. If one is an intermediate, I like to start adding more specific exercises for body parts that are lagging behind overall. You can find more on that in the WLC Intermediate Program section.
Guidelines for Intermediates
1. Usually will have greater than a few months experience lifting weights seriously. None of this on and off stuff.
2. An Intermediate will know how to perform important compound exercises like the Squat, Deadlift, Bench Press, Rows, Overhead Press and more using heavy weight and good form.
3. Knows rep maxes and about how much weight can be lifted for each exercise.
4. An Intermediate has made some good progress lifting weights and has gained a decent amount of muscle.
A specific WLC Program has been designed for Intermediates and will be customized by the intermediate weight lifter to meet his/her specific goals. You're going to have to use your own judgement to decide on whether or not you are an intermediate lifter.
A few more Guidelines that you might use
Just in case you're not sure and can't make a decision, here are a few more guidelines that are more specific and could change according to one's strength levels. Don't take these guidelines too seriously...
1. Can you Squat at least your body weight?
2. Have you gained a lot of strength on key compound exercises like the Squat and Deadlift?
3. Can you Deadlift more than your body weight?
4. Can you perform Pull Ups with your body weight for 6 or more reps?
5. Can you perform Dips with your body weight for 8 or more reps?
Hope these few extra guidelines help you make your decision. I hope you understand what I am saying in that there is not a specific line drawn between what an intermediate and beginner can do. You will have to decide.
If you were not very strong to start out with, but you've made a lot of progress and know what you're doing then you are an intermediate. Don't let a few guidelines deter you. I have only put these here as guidelines or help for some people who are having trouble classifying themselves.
Most Lifters are Intermediates
Most weight lifters that have been lifting for years still fall under the category of intermediate because they do not know what they are doing. They blindly go to the gym and never set any goals or make plans. They never improve. They get their beginner gains and then stay the same forever.
Don't become content with the Intermediate Level
You have to get better to be advanced and that's what the WLC Intermediate Program will do for you. It will get you to Advanced much faster! You don't want to stay the same year after year, do you? Work hard to make it to the advanced level and you will have the body you've always wanted!
