The suprailliac skinfold measurement has proven to be the best site for measuring body fat percentage.
But, every person is different … let me explain:
Some people hold more body fat in other areas.
Maybe you hold more body fat in your thighs. Maybe you hold more in your middle back area. Only you know where you hold the most amount of body fat.
In general, the suprailliac is the single best measurement site because it is the most accurate for the majority of people…
This doesn’t mean that you can’t monitor other sites to measure your progress.
You can measure any site on your body and monitor fat loss progress at that site.
You can choose any measurement sites you want, but always include the suprailliac in your measurements. This gives you an easy method of obtaining your body fat percentage.
As long as your skinfold measurements are going down, you are losing fat in that area of your body.
Here Are Some Other Typical Skinfold Measurement Locations:
You can measure any fat skinfold on your entire body and measure it to ensure you are losing fat in that area.
Just remember that every person is different and body fat comes off different areas of the body at different rates. One person might lose body fat quickly in the abdominal area while someone else might lose fat in that area very slowly.
Just make sure you take the skin fold in the exact same location each time you measure:
- Chest (diagonal fold midway between armpit and nipple)
- Subscapular (diagonal fold directly below the shoulder blade)
- Abdominal (vertical skinfold one inch to the right of the belly button)
- Triceps (vertical skinfold on posterior side of arm halfway between shoulder and elbow)
- Midaxillary (vertical skinfold directly under the arm pit)
- Thigh (vertical measurement halfway between knee and hip in midline of the thigh)
- Biceps (vertical skinfold on anterior side of arm halfway between shoulder and elbow)
- Calf (vertical skinfold on medial side of calf)
The suprailliac will be enough for most of all of us. I’ve included these other measurement sites for those that want to monitor body fat in other areas of your body.
You can come up with any type of custom measurements plan that you want. For example, if you want to measure fat loss in your thighs, simply add a thigh skinfold measurement during your weekly assessment.
Always take the suprailiac measurement but feel free to add any other skinfold measurements for close monitoring in that area of your body.
Measure All of The Skinfold Sites if You Like…
Personally, I like to measure all of them just so I can see all the progress I am making.
Yes, it’s going to take some extra time and you might even need some help for some of the measurements as some are tough to reach on your own.
But, I do believe it’s best to take as many measurements as possible.
You’ll soon learn where your body prefers to burn fat as it will come off easy. And then you’ll learn the stubborn areas for body fat as we all have those too.
Taking other skinfold measurements to monitor body fat really helps you learn your body and where fat is easy to lose and where fat is more difficult to lose for you.
