Overall
Goal
What
do you
want to look like?
What is your overall
goal? What kind of body are you looking to build for
yourself? Treat your journey as a construction project and realize that
you can't quit until you are finished!
No matter what you want to look like, you're going to have to build
muscle and lose fat. It's just a matter of knowing how much muscle you
want to build and how much fat you want to lose. Building muscle and
losing fat takes time, so don't expect to be huge with bulging muscles
overnight or have all your fat disappear magically!
Nothing happens magically no matter what you've heard from those
television commercials, magazines, or websites. You're going to have to
work hard and be dedicated. It really is that simple. Work hard and be
smart about your weight lifting program, cardio, and diet and you'll be
on your way to that body you envision.
My Overall Goal
I want you to learn by example, so I'm going to reveal my overall goal
to you. As you go throughout your construction project, your goals may
change. It is perfectly fine to change your goals.
You might look better than you ever imagined with a certain amount of
muscle, and you just don't want to be any bigger. It's fine to stop
there and to focus on fat loss. Once you lose the fat you want, you can
go into a maintenance mode where you simply exercise for health and to
keep your body the same!
I've changed my overall goal from getting as big as humanly possible to
being big with a lower body fat percentage. I want to be healthy for my
family. I want to be around for a long time! I want to be there for my
family. I want to set an example for all of them.
So, my overall goal is to be much bigger than the average person, less
body fat than the average person, and to be as healthy as possible. I
want to be able to play sports and to be good at them for a long time.
My ideal weight is around 230 pounds at 10 percent body fat. I'm 5'11"
tall, so 230 pounds at a low body fat percentage is impressive compared
to the average person. That is my overall goal, but who knows, I might
not be happy at that weight and body fat percentage! That's why your
goals can change as you see the results.
How do I get there?
At this time in my construction project, I've been to 237 pounds and
around 13 percent body fat. I've been through many muscle building
stages and fat loss stages to get to where I am today. I started at 215
pounds and nearly 30 percnet body fat. I went down to 155 pounds and 10
percent body fat.
I've been a long way in my journey, but I'm still not there. To reach
my goal, I need to lose more body fat. So, in my current plan, I will
going through several fat loss cycles while trying to build muscle and
hold onto as much muscle as possible. My focus will be on fat loss.
My fat loss cycles will again put me below my target body weight. So,
after the fat loss cycles, I will slowly build muscle until I reach my
target body weight. I will attempt to keep body fat off while building
muscle. Simple, right?
