I am sick and tired of all the false information out there on potatoes and how they are bad for you and will make you fat.
With as long as I’ve been in the fitness and health industry reading all of the lies and trash, I believe most anyone would be sick of hearing about potatoes and other so-called BAD “white carbohydrates.”
Many so-called fitness professionals go as far to tell you to stop eating ANY and all “white” carbohydrates. What a ridiculous thing to tell people who are trying to improve their body.
White bread, refined white sugar, and other processed and refined foods made with white flour should 100% definitely be avoided. Here are some others to avoid:
Just make sure you aren’t eating the above white foods, but remember that potatoes aren’t the same and here’s why:
Potatoes Are NOT A Refined and Processed White Carbohydrate!!!
Don’t try to stick potatoes in that same category. The same one that includes white bread and other refined and unhealthy carbs… Because it’s not even close.
White, red, yellow, purple, blue, sweet and other potato varieties are all VERY good for you and very healthy for you.
That means the “potato” is good for you — not all the stuff that you might put on or in your potato.
But we’re not talking about how you cook potatoes or what you put into or on your potato. We are talking about potatoes ONLY.
And while we’re at it, let’s take a second to talk about other “white” carbohydrates that others have told you to avoid in their “avoid any and all white carbohydrates.”
Colorful foods (fruits and veggies) are amazing and usually filled with all types of different vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. A variety of colorful foods should fill your diet each day.
But what about white foods like…
Try to Tell Me These White Foods Aren’t Healthy…
Are these white foods healthy or unhealthy? What do you think?
- White Beans
- White Potatoes
- White Mushrooms
TIP: don’t deep-fry any healthy foods or smother them with butter, sour cream, and cheese because you’re simply moving in the negative direction when it comes to nutrition.
From the list above…
Onions and garlic both hinder the growth of intestinal parasites and germs. They both help fight off infections both in the lungs and digestive tract. Both are rich sources of sulphur and selenium.
Cauliflower is an amazing vegetable and one that shouldn’t be avoided due to it’s white color. It’s high in fiber, minerals, biotin, and it gives amazing protection against colon cancer.
Turnips are great digestive aids and contain high amounts of very powerful anti-carcinogenic glucosinolates. Turnips contain vitamin B and C, potassium, calcium, and phosphorus among other nutrients.
Mushrooms and cabbage also have high levels of unique nutrients that you need. We could go on all day about the health benefits of these amazing foods, but we won’t.
Just from the above list, you can see that all “white foods” aren’t EVIL like others have told you… especially potatoes!!!
TIP: definitely cook your vegetables as raw vegetables can be too bulky for your body to obtain the mineral content.
BUT — What About Potatoes??? So Many People Can’t Be Wrong!
Let’s move onto potatoes — the one vegetable that has an extremely bad name in our world today. I want to talk about them in detail.
Potatoes provide you with vitamin C, vitamin B complex, potassium, calcium, and iron.
Just one medium-sized potato provides you with 28% of the RDA for Vitamin C and 27% of the RDA for Vitamin B6. They give you a good amount of folate as well with 12% of the RDA. You also get 26% of RDA for Potassium, 19% RDA for Manganese, and 12% each of Magnesium and Phosphorus. Plus, you get a good variety of other vitamins and minerals as well.
Make sure you eat the skin of the potato as most nutrients are just under the skin.
Don’t peel them… INSTEAD you should chop them, slice them, dice them or whatever you want — just keep the skin on them!
Potatoes also contain chlorogenic acid. Chlorogenic acid is a chemical that prevents cell mutations that can lead to cancer.
In other words, have some potatoes in your diet. Feel free to eat them in their natural form when using the WLC System.
Well, I Guess That Ends the “Debate” on the Evil Potato
Hopefully, this article puts an end to the FALSE claims that potatoes will make you fat and unhealthy.
Remember that I always recommend a large variety of different foods because each food is unique in the nutrients that it provides to your body.
An occasional potato is only going to help your muscle building and fat burning efforts. And that’s the REAL TRUTH about potatoes. There’s no reason to eat potatoes at every meal or every other meal if you strive for variety.
Remember that too much of any good thing is not a good thing. So get variety in your diet and that includes the occasional potato here and there.
If you’re not yet convinced…
More Amazing Properties of the Potato
I want to list out some more amazing properties of potatoes just in case you didn’t catch them all in the previous section:
- reduce inflammation
- treat acidosis
- juice has antibiotic properties
- neutralizes body acids
- lowers blood pressure
- treats stomach ulcers
In order to keep most of the potassium in the potato, do not boil them. Baking is a good choice.
TIP: do not eat the sprouts that come out of potatoes as they are poisonous. Cut them off and the potato will be great to eat. These sprouts grow due to exposure to light.
An AWESOME Potato Recipe
I will leave you with one of my absolute favorite potato recipes compliments of my friend Yuri Elkaim at Total Wellness Cleanse:
Roasted Rosemary Sweet Potatoes
makes 2 servings
1-2 sweet potatoes
2 tbsp coconut oil
2 large rosemary sprigs
pinch of sea salt
1. Peel sweet potatoes and cut into 1-inch pieces.
2. Coat oven tray with coconut oil.
3. Transfer to an oven tray, sprinkle with rosemary and salt and place in an oven heated to 425F until they are golden on the edges, roughly 25 minutes.
Again, this is an awesome recipe. You’ve got to give this a try. I loved them from the first bite. So healthy and so tasty! Some other recipes on the Total Wellness Cleanse will make you gag (as they did me), but the one above is a WINNER!
Potatoes Don’t Have to Be Boring ANY MORE!
My Father absolutely hates mashed potatoes. He grew up on a farm and his Mother would force him to eat mashed potatoes almost every night (according to him).
He will eat baked potatoes or potatoes in any other form, but for some reason… he won’t touch mashed potatoes. I find it a little weird but I was never forced to eat all the food on my plate either. I always offer him some mashed potatoes when we have Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinner. Any time I get the chance… I say “Hey Dad, here… you want some mashed potatoes?”
He always says, “No, thank you Son. You know I don’t like those.” It’s my way of just joking with him.
What I’m getting at is…
It’s time to try something new with potatoes. Red potatoes with the skin on them, cut up, and boiled in a pot are amazing.
Did you know there are over 1000 types of potatoes? Some of the most popular include:
- Purple (sometimes called Blue) Potatoes
- Red Potatoes
- Russet (Idaho) Potatoes
- White Potatoes
- Yellow Finn Potatoes
- Fingerling Potatoes
Look for unusual potato recipes. Don’t just mash them up like my Grandmother did for my Father. Cut them up into fries and bake them in the oven. Have them in a nutritious potato salad, or in a potato soup. Cook them with a grass fed beef roast.
The options are unlimited! Use your imagination.
DANGER: One More Important Tip for Potatoes
As usual, our society has taken good things and gotten greedy over those good things. In order to make more money or supposedly feed more people, we have these huge farms that focus on one crop and one crop only.
Mixing crops correctly can prevent the use of pesticides, but it cuts down on profit.
So instead of doing the right thing, our society has once again put money first — as always.
When you go to buy potatoes, make sure you buy organic! Potatoes are one of the highest commercially sprayed foods in existence so it’s very important to buy organic. This gets rid of all the dangerous pesticides, herbicides, and preservatives on them.
Buy them from a local farmer and support your local farmers. Small farms are the heart of the world, and continue to supply us with the truly healthy foods in our food supply. Support them, and you will be rewarded with amazing health.
One More Awesome Potato Recipe…
One of my good friends at another site has an awesome recipe at the bottom of this article:
It’s actually a great recipe because it includes red peppers, green peppers, yellow peppers, onions, garlic, and extra virgin olive oil — all very healthy and very nutritious ingredients.
Awesome recipe! Have used it many times myself for dinner.
I never hesitate sending you to Mike because I know he’ll only give you the healthiest and most nutritious recipes. You won’t find any refined or process foods in his recipes. He’s one of the few people I personally trust.
Hope You Learn to Enjoy Potatoes!
I am glad you got a chance to finally learn the truth about potatoes and how they are extremely healthy for you in their natural state.
Make sure you wash those potatoes very well before cooking and eating them.
Buy organic and/or locally grown from your small farmers.
Guaranteed your produce will be healthier, fresher, and more nutritious than anything you can buy in a store.
Check with the farmer to make sure he/she does not spray chemicals on their potatoes. Some small farmers may use chemicals, and may have never thought about the harmful effects.
If you liked this article, please share it with your friends, family, co-workers, and neighbors. It’s time for all of them to learn the truth.
