Starting Resistance With WLC System

by eric
(TX)

I am new to weight training. I have read through the WLC system ebook. I just got a bowflex, I am thinking I am going to start with your 12 week bowflex program.

Being new to lifting and my bowflex, how do I pick a resistance to start with for my 8 reps first day and 12 rep days after that?

How often do I increase weight and how much?

thanks!

Starting Weights and Increasing the Weight
by: Josh -- Author WLC System

Hey Eric,

Hope you like the WLC System Manual so far...

With your Bowflex, you might need to experiment a little. I can't tell you exactly what to start with for each exercise because everyone is so different.

What I can tell you, though, is you need to start out with very light weights. I know it might be easy at first or even very easy, BUT you will have plenty of opportunities to increase the weight.

If you read the Muscle Building chapter in the WLC System Manual, you'll see that the most important factor is increasing the weight or resistance from workout to workout.

The strategy I use is for you to start out with light weights or low resistance.

For example, start with the lowest resistance on the Bowflex... then increase each workout while decreasing reps.

If you start with very low resistance and increase it to the highest resistance at the end of the program, you will build lots of lean muscle in the process if you follow the diet and nutrition guidelines in the manual.

I hope you see what I mean...

If the resistance is just too easy for a certain exercise the first workout, just increase it by a lot more the second workout.

You'll find the right resistances for each exercise after a few workouts. Then, you start getting stronger and stronger by increasing the resistance as often as possible on your Bowflex.

Hope this answers your question -- just respond here if you have more questions.

Warm regards,
Josh

Confirming understanding
by: eric

basically just start with something I can do even if it is easy, then each workout add (and if it was real easy add a lot) soon I get where I should be.

am I hearing right?

Yes... that's exactly right

Hey Eric...

Yes. That is exactly right. Before long, you'll know exactly what you can do. Then work on smashing your previous workout record in the upcoming workout. Always work on increasing the resistance if form is good.
