Torn Pectoral Muscle

by Dennis Carrigan
(Elkmont, Alabama)

Hi,

I'm 68 years old and just started weight lifting about a year and a half ago.

I was able to bench press 290. Recently I took a fall from a tree and free fell for about 6 feet before catching hold of a branch with my left hand.

I hung on, but in doing so, I shredded the tendon and detached my pectoral muscle. After an MRI, the surgeon decided, that there was nothing he could do for me.

It has been two months now, and I have gone back to lifting. I can now do 180 lbs.

My question is this: Will I do more damage, or should I keep going. The doctor said to do so, but with care. My goal is to get back to 225.

What do you think?

Thanks
Denny

Bench Press Changes for Injury
by: Josh -- Author WLC System

Can I ask you how many reps you are doing?

If you can keep the reps higher rather than lower, I believe you can do much more good than harm.

I'm talking 15 to 20 reps.

Progress in that rep range on the bench press and you'll do very good.

I also suggest a slight incline with the bench and I would switch over to dumbbells instead of barbells.

All of these changes will allow you to continue doing the bench press safely without injury.

Always concentrate on perfect form and technique and never push it too hard on the bench press since you have this injury.

Just be careful in the gym, and remember to work your entire body. Not sure if you are doing the rest of your body because you only mentioned the bench press.

I highly recommend you change your goals to more reps and a different weight with dumbbells rather than barbells. I also highly recommend using a slight incline with the bench press.

Hope this helps you out, and I wish you the best with your goals. I am always here to help if you need anything. Let me know how it goes for you.
