Should You Use Weight Lifting Wrist Straps? Yes? No?

Weight lifting wrist straps are an important weight lifting accessory for one important reason. That reason is improved grip strength.
Grip strength should not be a limiting factor when lifting weights. Let's say that you could perform barbell deadlifts from the floor with 500 pounds of weight for 8 reps. But because your grip strength is much weaker, you can only do 350 pounds for 8 reps.
You are severely limiting the amount of progress you could be making all because of your grip strength.
So... for now -- you should use wrist straps so you aren't limiting your progress. BUT, you should also work on improving your grip strength so you don't need any strap in the future. See what I mean?
There's no reason to let your grip strength limit your progress.
Continue Progression With Your Weight Lifting...
Why not use wrist straps so you can continue progressing with your barbell deadlifts from the floor while you work on your grip strength?
Too many people will not use wrist straps because they want their grip to be strong. That's fine, but you shouldn't let your grip be the limiting factor to strength progression on other exercises. Continue progressing on all exercises no matter what your grip strength may be.
Some people would rather stop their progression on exercises and wait for their grip to catch up. Why? Use the straps and keep progressing.
Wouldn't you rather be deadlifting 500 pounds than 350 pounds? Do you know how much more muscle you would have? I'll answer that one: You'll have muscle you never thought possible with that huge strength gain on deadlifts.
Concentrate On The Intended Muscle Group
Buy a good set of weight lifting wrist straps. A good set will only cost you 10 dollars or so and will last you a long time. You'll be lifting more and concentrating more on the muscle you intend to work.
Have you ever been in the middle of a set and your grip starts failing, but the intended muscle group you're working has not been fully worked?
You start to think more about your grip and holding on to the bar for as long as possible. I've been there many times.
You lose focus on the muscle group you're working. You only worry about your grip while trying to perform more reps on the exercise.
You never want that to happen because even worse things can happen...
Your Form Can Break Down When You Lose Concentration...
Do you know what else happens when you lose focus during an exercise? That's right. Your form starts to break down because you're worrying about your grip failing.
If you're doing deadlifts from the floor, maybe that means you start to round your back as you're trying to lift on the positive rep.
As you try to lift, your grip is giving out but you forget to keep your form and your back rounds. You injure your back as a result and have to take a few weeks to a few months off from weight training.
Those few weeks off set you back much further than two weeks. You have to slowly work your way back up to the weight you were using when the injury happened because you've lost some of your strength during the time off.
This might be a scenario that you think won't happen, but it has happened and many times. You might even know someone who went through this exact scenario. You might even be one of those people.
Just Use The Straps While You Work On Your Grip
The easy way to not worry about your grip giving out on you is to use weight lifting wrist straps when you need them. Use them for the exercises in which your grip starts to fail.
I don't care if it's towards the end of the set. Use them because the end of the set is when you need to concentrate the most. The end of the set is where the muscle building stimulus is triggered.Concentration at that time is the most important.
Your grip is not going to suffer from using straps. Don't use straps on the lighter exercises like stiff legged deadlifts and barbell rows. Work on your grip as you progress on those exercises. Use straps for the heavier exercises like barbell deadlifts, barbell hack squats, and weighted chin ups.
Use lifting straps for any exercise that gives you trouble with your grip. You can then work on your grip as you progress in other weightlifting exercises.

Totally Blown Away by the WLC System...
Hi Josh,
Greetings from Australia, mate. I received your WLC Program recently and
have only just got to emailing you (reason being I took quite a while
exploring the entire package!!!).
I have to admit that over the past years
I've purchased many programs via the internet and I can say with complete
honesty that I have *never, ever*, had the pleasure of receiving one such as
yours!!!
I was totally blown away by everything, from the log books, the
big beefy manual, right on through to all those fantastic calculators! It
comes through that you really put your all into the package. I've seen all
those programs which claim to 'lay it all out for you ... paint by numbers
... take you step-by-step', etc.but only one is deserving of these claims
... and it's yours.
I especially found the goal setting information to be
very, very comprehensive and so well laid out. I've read goal setting
books, articles, websites, etc. but never really applied any of it to my
endeavours in the gym.
Your system will have me going after my dream body
with a vengeance, as I will be commencing the program this coming Monday.
In previous years I was a chronic "routine/program hopper"; I'd spot yet
another new system I thought I would follow and away I'd go ... for about 3
weeks if I was lucky!
Despite all that, during some years I'd build a
little muscle, lose a little fat and start looking reasonable, then slack
off. I have a well equipped home gym which includes everything you
recommend.
I have always been good with my meal choices but the bottom line
is I was never consistent with anything!!!!
I have a very strong feeling
all that is about to end - pronto! I'm really looking forward to starting
the program Monday 30th August, and totally looking forward to some *real
results at last*.
Oh, by the way I am 56 years old and my long-term goal is
to have an awesome physique at 60 in comparison to the average one I had at
30.
Thank you once again for putting out such a terrific and very
complete program - I will not have any hesitation in recommending it to
everyone I know.
