Weight Training EquipmentEverything You Need to Know About the Weight Training Equipment You Need to Lift Weights
Properly and Safely at Home
You won't need a lot of fancy stuff to build your home gym. And you won't need a lot of space either. You just need some simple free weights and a few other pieces of weight lifting equipment. If you make good choices when buying equipment, you'll have everything you need for the rest of your life. We're going to show you exactly what you need so you get the best bang for your buck. A Home Gym Saves You Money and Helps You Make Better Progress in the Long RunLet's compare a home gym and a commercial gym. Have you ever been to a commercial gym before like 24Hour Fitness, Urban Fitness, or Gold's Gym? If you have, some of the things we're going to say below will be familiar to you.
A commercial gym has a large variety of equipment but most of that equipment is of no value on the WLC Program. Free weights are highly recommended over machines. So you can take all the machines you see in the gym and throw them out of the equation. With your own home gym, you don't have to wait for others to finish using certain weight training equipment that you need. The equipment is yours and when you're ready to use it, it's there for you. Let's face it... there are a lot of people at the gym. Some of them are very annoying. If you've ever been a regular member of a gym before, you'll know how annoying many of the people can be. Some are always trying to give you advice when you don't ask for it -- it's usually the people who have no idea what they are doing. There are tons of other distractions like personal trainers trying to get you to hire them, people who make discouraging remarks, and more. All you want to do is use the weight training equipment for your workout and get out of there BUT all the distractions make that very difficult to accomplish. A commercial gym plays the worst music for weight lifting. Of course, music all depends on your taste BUT I doubt many of you want to listen to love songs or slow music while you're lifting weights. It may work for the select few, but that's about it. With a home gym, you can listen to the music you want to listen to. And as loud as you want. Plus, you don't have to have an Ipod strap hanging on your arm if you want to listen to your music. Weight lifting music is very powerful, and you should listen to the music that gives you an emotional response... it gives you instant strength gains. And you won't get that at a commercial gym. A home gym costs more money initially BUT saves you a ton of money in the long run. You don't have to pay monthly fees to use your home gym. You simply buy the equipment and it's yours. There aren't any slick contracts to deal with, or gym employees that keep pestering you about your membership. You don't have to worry about any of that stuff. It only takes a year or two for you to earn your initial investment back. You save the monthly membership fee, gas money, wear and tear on your car, and time driving to and from the gym. And you get a home gym that will last a lifetime. If you go to a commercial gym you have to get everything ready, get your gym bag, your weight lifting gloves, your pre and post workout shake, your wrist straps, a towel, and more. You have to drive to the gym, get everything out, workout, and then drive back home. That's a lot of trouble for each weight lifting workout and each cardiovascular exercise workout. With a home gym, you don't have to worry about any of that. You have no excuse for not working out. Everything is right there for you. You'll make better progress because a home gym is so convenient. Gym Flooring
Gym flooring is a must if you plan on building a home gym. You need a
surface that protects your floor from high impacts with heavy weights.
You also want a floor that absorbs shock. The wrong flooring in your
gym can hurt your focus. |

Cable System This
cable system (shown to the left) is an add on to the Power
Rack shown in the table above. If you have the extra money, a cable
system is a great asset. It provides you with tons of new weight
lifting exercise options. |
| Plate Mates
Plate mates can be used to add small amounts of weight to dumbbells. You can
make smaller dumbbell increases other than 5 pound jumps. For example,
use 37.5 pound dumbbells instead of jumping up to the 40 pounders! | |

Smith Machine
A smith machine can be a good piece of weight training equipment when
combined with free weight exercises. This machine can add a great
amount of variety to your workouts. The Smith Machine is also great for
calf exercises. |

Trap Bar
A trap bar was originally made to work the trapezius muscle in the upper
back with shrugs. A trap bar can be used for trap bar deadlifts, which
happens to be a great alternative to squats. The trap bar deadlift is a
truly great exercise! |
