Is Whey Protein Better Than Real Food?
Let's Find The Truth...

by Joshua Tapp

Whey protein powder provides many benefits to the weight lifter who is trying to build muscle and lose fat.

If you currently do not use whey powder, or if you're looking for recommendations on what to buy, you'll find this page very helpful.

I'm not here to sell supplements. I really could care less if you use whey protien. Real food is better than whey MOST OF THE TIME.

Sometimes, though, protein powders has the advantage over real food.

Let's take a look at some of the advantages whey powder provides for building muscle and losing fat. Whey powder is a must after a heavy weight lifting workout.

"Whey protein powder is a must have for pre and post workout. It's a fast source of protein that gets the muscle building process started sooner. You will build more muscle using whey powder immediately post workout mixed with a simple carb source.

I recommend waxy maize as the simple carb source, and mixed at a 4:1 ratio with your whey protien. Take your whey mixed with waxy maize immediately post workout. If you don't have waxy maize yet, use dextrose, maltodextrin, or a combination of the two."

Advantages of Whey Protein Powder

I want you to realize before we go any further that whey protien is nothing spectacular compared to other sources of protein.

Whey powder does have some advantages over whole food sources of protein, and I will go over these advantages, but I don't want you to think that protein powder is going to turn you into the Hulk overnight because it won't.

There is nothing magical out there in the world of weight lifting and supplements. Steroids are the only thing close and they are unsafe and illegal for good reasons.

Whey is one of the best weight lifting supplements available and it is definitely not magical.

Make sure you realize that great muscle building and fat loss results are a combination of a good weight lifting, diet, and cardiovascular program.

#1. Whey Protein provides convenience in your busy world.

Whey protien allows you to easily increase your daily intake of protein. It is very important that you increase your daily intake of protein if you are looking to build strength, build muscle, and lose fat.

I recommend protein intakes as high as two times your body weight per day. Many people think this is much too high and the extra protein isn't needed, but I have the results to prove those people wrong.

Do your own experiment and tell me the increased protein intake didn't help you build more muscle.

Simply start with lower intakes and increase. And watch the difference in results. I've seen success too many times with higher protein intakes to ignore.

When you attempt to eat 2 times your body weight in protein, you'll find it tough to eat that much whole food per day. Well, protein powder can easily help you to reach that goal. In less than a minute, you can fix yourself a protein shake and have 50 grams of quality protein down the hatch.

If you have a busy life, you'll appreciate the convenience and quickness that whey protien provides.

#2. Whey Protien provides a different taste.

If you've tried gaining weight or gaining muscle mass before, you'll find out that you need to eat lots and lots of food. You will get tired of eating chicken breast and tuna all day, every day.

You'll look forward to getting a quick meal consisting of liquids that you can easily drink. I've been there.

When you are dieting hard for fat loss, whey protein provides a meal that tastes great. You'll think you're having dessert. If you get the right flavor and brand, you'll look forward to drinking those protien shakes.

My wife actually looks forward to her protein shakes because she loves the taste of chocolate. It took me years to get her to try a protein shake, and now she loves them.

The taste of whey shakes have come a long way. They no longer taste nasty. Most brands have great flavors. I'll give you some of them on down the page...

#3. Whey Protein is one of the cheapest forms of Protein.

If you do some calculations, you'll find that whey powder is actually one of the cheapest forms of protein available.

Many weight lifters and fitness enthusiasts never realize this. You can actually save tons of dollars per month by using whey protien powder.

The only food that compares in price to whey powder is the canned tuna. Let's do a quick price comparison between canned tuna and whey powder.

5 pound container of whey
1700 grams of protein
4.5 oz can of tuna
34 grams of protein
Cost per gram = 2.35 cents Cost per gram = 2.32 cents

As you can see, canned tuna is slightly cheaper per gram, but whey protein is much easier to eat and much quicker. It's also easier to just drink down than trying to choke down the fishy tasting canned tuna.

I would much rather drink some chocolate protein than try to eat a nasty can of tuna. It's your choice, though.

#4. Whey is a fast acting source of protein

Whey protien also provides another advantage that whole food proteins can't. Before and after your weight lifting workout, you need a fast acting protein source that gets to your muscle faster.

You want to start the muscle building process as soon as possible and take advantage of the window of opportunity that a workout gives you.

With Whey -- It's much easier to get the needed nutrients for muscle building to your muscles after a workout. You don't want to miss this opportunity by feeding your body a very slow source of protein that takes too much time to digest.

Whey gives you a fast acting source of protein that starts the muscle building process and gives your body the nutrients it needs to build muscle.

Combine whey with a fast acting carb post workout to spike your insulin and store even more of the nutrients your body needs to build muscle.

Insulin is very powerful for building muscle BUT it also is a fat storage agent. BUT, before and after a workout... fat will not be stored. Instead -- nutrients will be stored for muscle recovery.

The Whey Protein I Use And Recommend

I've been using Optimum Nutrition Whey Protein for years and years. It's a good quality protein at a good price. That's why I've continued to use it for so long.

Totally Blown Away by the WLC System...

Hi Josh,

Greetings from Australia, mate. I received your WLC Program recently and have only just got to emailing you (reason being I took quite a while exploring the entire package!!!).

I have to admit that over the past years I've purchased many programs via the internet and I can say with complete honesty that I have *never, ever*, had the pleasure of receiving one such as yours!!!

I was totally blown away by everything, from the log books, the big beefy manual, right on through to all those fantastic calculators! It comes through that you really put your all into the package. I've seen all those programs which claim to 'lay it all out for you ... paint by numbers ... take you step-by-step', etc.but only one is deserving of these claims ... and it's yours.

I especially found the goal setting information to be very, very comprehensive and so well laid out. I've read goal setting books, articles, websites, etc. but never really applied any of it to my endeavours in the gym.

Your system will have me going after my dream body with a vengeance, as I will be commencing the program this coming Monday.

In previous years I was a chronic "routine/program hopper"; I'd spot yet another new system I thought I would follow and away I'd go ... for about 3 weeks if I was lucky!

Despite all that, during some years I'd build a little muscle, lose a little fat and start looking reasonable, then slack off. I have a well equipped home gym which includes everything you recommend.

I have always been good with my meal choices but the bottom line is I was never consistent with anything!!!!

I have a very strong feeling all that is about to end - pronto! I'm really looking forward to starting the program Monday 30th August, and totally looking forward to some *real results at last*.

Oh, by the way I am 56 years old and my long-term goal is to have an awesome physique at 60 in comparison to the average one I had at 30. Thank you once again for putting out such a terrific and very complete program - I will not have any hesitation in recommending it to everyone I know.

Cheers,
Gary McDonald
