The best hamstring exercises will be discussed on this page.
If you're looking to choose the best exercises for your weight lifting program, you've found the right place.
Many people forget about the hamstrings.
Many people will rely purely on squats to fully work the hamstrings. This is a big mistake that many people make. By working the hamstrings with the best exercises, you can increase your strength on the squat and build more muscle.
Let's get straight to the hamstring exercises…
The Best Hamstring Exercises You Can Do
In no particular order…
The links above are quick links to the exercises further down this page.
Romanian Deadlifts
The Romanian Deadlift, in my opinion, is the best hamstring exercise you can perform. Variety is great, though, so let's look at some more of the best hamstrings exercises…
Stiff Legged Deadlifts
The stiff legged deadlift is not the same weightlifting exercise as the romanian deadlift. Notice the huge difference in the two exercises…
Glute/Ham Raise
You've got to have a special setup to perform this great hamstring exercise. Check out these videos of the glute/ham raise…
The glute hamstring raise is sometimes referred to as a GHR. You can add weight to the exercise by holding plates as shown in the first video.
Good Mornings
The good morning exercise is a very good hamstring exercise. This exercise can be tough at first, but focusing on the hamstrings during the lift really helps.
Notice the different depths in the videos above. You should go with lighter weights and use a greater range of motion as shown in the first video above.
Pull Thru
I love the pull thru as one of the best exercises for the hamstrings. You'll love them too.
Leg Curls
Leg curls are more of an isolation exercise than all of the exercises above. I always prefer compound exercises to isolation exercises. Leg curls are useful because they don't fatigue you as much as the compound exercises above.
After you watch these videos, I think you'll understand more of why I don't recommend leg curls over all the exercises above. Using the word squeeze is one of the reasons… ha, ha.
Let me explain… when you're working out more frequently with full body workouts, sometimes your lower back needs a break from the deadlifts. Leg curls can be used to work your hamstrings YET give your lower back a break.
