I break gym equipment down into two main categories here at Weight Lifting Complete.
These categories are weightlifting equipment and fitness equipment.
Let's talk about the differences between the two.
You need to know the difference and the purpose of each.
Weight lifting equipment is for building muscle and strength. Fitness equipment is for cardiovascular exercise and conditioning exercise. Cardiovascular exercise is for burning body fat while conditioning exercise is for improving your fitness level.
So… let's talk about weight training equipment and fitness equipment:
Weight Lifting Equipment
Any equipment specifically used for the purpose of weight lifting.
This includes power racks, weight benches, olympic barbell weight sets, olympic weights, dumbbells, smith machines, and other weight lifting machines such as the leg press, leg curl, and calf raise machine.
Here on Weight Lifting Complete, I discuss home gym equipment in detail.
You can learn what to purchase for your home gym and why to purchase certain equipment. You'll get all the details you need to make good purchasing decisions.
I also always recommend that you compare prices between equipment suppliers and read reviews on any equipment you're thinking of purchasing.
Check out an example of the type of detail you get for each piece of weightlifting equipment and the price comparison from different suppliers for power racks.
I refer to fitness equipment as gym equipment for cardiovascular exercise and/or conditioning exercise.
When you go to a commercial gym, you'll see a whole bunch of treadmills, elliptical machines, rowing machines, and exercise bikes depending on the gym. So, I refer to all of this equipment as fitness equipment.
I dedicated an entire section of the site to home fitness equipment.
I discuss the five different cardio machines that I like best for a home gym. You can read more about the 5 different machines you should look into purchasing for your home gym.
I always recommend that you have at least two different cardio machines for your home gym.
You should always include cardiovascular exercise in your weightlifting program due to the endless benefits it's going to provide you.
Two different cardio machines will help you to look forward to your cardio and provide convenience in the comfort of your own home. You'll have no excuses not to perform your cardio.
Choose two different pieces of fitness equipment that include both upper and lower body exercise.
At least one of the machines you purchase should have some upper body exercise. For example, a rowing machine and a treadmill are good choices because the rowing machine works your entire body while the treadmill is mostly lower body work.
I like for you to have a couple options for fitness equipment inside your home.
The recommended option is doing cardiovascular exercise outdoors, but sometimes that's not possible. If it rains or is very cold or even very hot, you might want to stay inside and use your fitness equipment.
