When looking at the current world record bench press, the numbers are astonishing.
I couldn't even imagine lifting that amount of weight.
Do you know what the current world bench press record is?
You probably won't believe it when I tell you.
Before we get to the actual numbers and video of one of the world bench press records, I wanted to explain that there are actually two different world records for bench press.
The first world bench press record is a raw bench press without any extra equipment.
This means the weight lifter does not use a bench shirt. The second world record is a bench press using a bench shirt. The lifter may use the shirt which increases strength.
The Raw Bench Press Record (Without Equipment)
The biggest raw bench press in the world at the time of this writing is 715 pounds. I couldn't imagine bench pressing 715 pounds!
This is an amazing feat of strength and was accomplished by an American Powerlifter by the name of Scot Mendelson. You have to be a special person with amazing physical strength.
Scot Mendelson set this world record without a bench shirt on May 22nd 2005. He was 36 years old at the time. Scot currently lives in California and has 3 children. Scot weighed in at 314 pounds at the time he set this world record bench press so he is a very large man.
He also held the equipped bench press record at one time. That record has been broken by the man mentioned later on in this weight lifting article. Let's take a look at the video of Scot's record bench press:
I wanted you to see this today because I want you to realize, and I mean realize, how amazing the human body can be. Never put a limit on what you can do. If Scot would have limited himself, you wouldn't have just witnessed the video above.
So let the video above be a reminder to never limit yourself. Shoot for the biggest goals your mind can conceive and never look back. Go for it. You can do this.
The Equipped Bench Press Record
The biggest bench press of all time is currently set at 1070 pounds. This bench was accomplished by Ryan Kennelly. He was wearing a bench shirt to assist him in this record setting achievement.
Ryan Kennelly has broken his own world record now twice and is the current holder. He lifted 1070 pounds on April 12, 2008. Who knows? He may be getting ready to break his record once again.
Kennelly is an American Powerlifter and has had as much as 1300 pounds on the bar during a failed 5 board press. Ryan stands 6 feet 2 inches tall.
1070 pounds is absolutely amazing to me. I couldn't imagine lifting that kind of weight on any exercise.
I don't have the 1070 pound bench press record video, but I do have a video of an older world record performed by Scot Mendelson. This previous world record was an equipped record at 1015 pounds. Here it is:

Dear Sir(s),
The professional athlete “Hercules of Cyprus”, Andreas Savvides, was undoubtedely the strongest man of the world ever lived. Everyday in his peerformance program he stopped two moving landrovers or a helicopter, etc with his hands., a bus full of passengers was passing over his abdomen, 30 men were trying to open his arms unsuccessfully, etc. In the District Championships (Nicosia, 7 August, 1976) with a bodyweight of 90 kg, he lifted 995 pounds in Bench Press, 995 pounds in deadlift, and 457 pounds in standing curl.
If you would like, I can send you a brief summary of his feats (about 8 pages) by e-mail (please send me your e-mail).
Yours sincerely
